Empowering pharmacy leaders: Skills for nurturing high performing teams

This workshop is tailored to pharmacists in senior management roles, overseeing multiple staff members. This session is designed to equip you with essential tools for enhancing workplace conversations and implementing effective restorative strategies to boost team engagement and performance. During the workshop, we will delve into the challenges commonly faced by pharmacists, including moral distress, vicarious trauma, and burnout and explore the core skills required to optimise your team's engagement. Through practical exercises and discussions, you'll try out various communciation strategies that you can use to foster an environment that encourages professional growth, a positive workplace culture, and enhances staff retention.  This workshop will provide a valuable opportunity to reflect on your role as a senior manager and practice the skills needed to drive optimal professional accomplishment and engagement within your pharmacy team.

Paediatrics and neonatology workshop

Facilitated by the Paediatrics and Neonatology Leadership Committee

Join leading Paediatric specialists as they delve into innovative uses of medicine in children, analysing the ethical considerations and practical decision making impacts on pharmaceutical practice in the Neonatal and Paediatric specialty field.

Gain a comprehensive understanding and insight into treating and managing patients while they are on holidays, and the management of infections.  Identify strategies to manage cancer patient infections, and learn to differentiate between tropical infections and other common causes. Lightning talks and case vignettes will conclude the workshop with discussions around research and innovation surrounding the pharmaceutical care of children.

Geriatric Therapeutics: an update

Facilitated by the Geriatric Medicine Leadership Committee

Thursday 2 November, 1.30pm-5.00pm AEST

Dr Roselani Henry, a Staff Specialist, Older Persons Sub-acute and Rehabilitation at Cairns & Hinterland Hospital and Health Service (CHHHS), will offer a comprehensive update on two crucial areas: 

  • Addressing orthostatic hypertension in older adults, which encompasses understanding the mechanisms behind orthostatic hypotension and supine hypertension, as well as exploring current approaches to treatment. 
  • Examining the causes of the most common electrolyte imbalances in older individuals, including disruptions in sodium, potassium, magnesium, and calcium levels, and discussing strategies for managing these imbalances. 

Additionally, Dr Henry will delve into the prescribing and deprescribing of antidepressants and antipsychotics in the older adult population. This will involve assessing the advantages and disadvantages associated with the selection of various antidepressants for older individuals and exploring the choice of antipsychotics in the management of Behavioral and Psychological Symptoms in Dementia. Dr Henry will also provide an overview of the national and international resources available to guide deprescribing efforts in this context.
